NO. 01 · THE INAUGURAL ISSUE · FALL 2026

The best of your

county,

selected with care.

A curated celebration of the finest local businesses, makers, tables, and people across the DMV. Not a directory. Not a magazine. An edit.

THE DEBUT FEATURE

We begin with a person.

One summer abroad — and the woman who showed us exactly what we're looking for.

AWAY · THE INAUGURAL FEATURE

What We Did Last Summer

Before Hvar, Carolyn was one of us.

She's a Charlottesville native — a UVA "double Hoo," with a degree in literature and an MBA — who built a career in placemaking and spent years at the Aspen Institute in Washington. Then she did the thing the rest of us only talk about at dinner: she moved to a small Croatian island and built a school.

The Field School of Hvar began from a single conviction — that "schools can be an engine for healthy communities and a powerful instrument for building agency in young people." It's our inaugural feature not because it is near, but because it is the clearest example of what we look for: someone who cares more than she has to. That person is on your street here in the capital region, too.

THE WHOLE STORY · A FIVE-PART PODCAST

We never feature just an owner. The Field School comes in five conversations — with Carolyn, two of her teachers, and two families who crossed an ocean for the school — including a midwife whose own story we'll follow next.

FROM THE EDITORS

“We choose every business ourselves — for consistency, craft, and character, never for who paid the most. For now, we'll let the work speak; the names behind The Edit will follow in time.”

WHAT THE COUNTY EDIT IS

Not a directory. Not a
magazine. An edit.

Curated, Not Crowdsourced

Every business is chosen with intention —
the hidden gems, the tables worth the drive,
the makers who take their time.

Editorial, Not Advertorial

Beautiful photography and honest
storytelling. We tell you why a place matters
— not just that it exists.

Community, Not Commerce

A love letter to place. When local thrives,
the whole community is richer for it — and
that is the point.

POSTCARDS

A summer worth keeping.

The tables, the coves, and the detours worth the trip.

FROM THE EDIT

Stories worth

slowing down for.

DETAILS

Behind the Door

The doorways of Old Town where a lion at the threshold says more than any sign ever could.

MEET THE MAKER

Behind the Counter

The people who make a place — like the chef who turned a food truck into a local following.

FOUNDATION

THE PRINTED EDITION · THE CAPITAL EDIT

A year of the capital region, bound in one volume.

Our inaugural volume — The Capital Edit —

celebrates the whole capital region in one beautifully

bound hardcover. Heavy paper, considered

typography, and photography worth framing. The

kind of book that stays on the coffee table long after

the year turns.

THE MEMBERSHIP

Selected, not listed.

We don't sell placement — we extend it. Membership is by
invitation, and being asked is the honor.

Consistency

Excellence, every single time.

Craft

Care taken in the details.

Character

A point of view all its own.

Community

Rooted in the place we love.

THE INAUGURAL EDITION

One region, one edit.

We begin with The Capital Edit — the whole capital region,

Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, in a single volume. In time,

the DMV grows into its own editions, area by area. But it starts here,

together.

A curated celebration of the best of local across
Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
